Portable turbidity testing
Understand what turbidity shows, where to test it and which portable instrument fits dedicated measurement or wider field investigations.
What is turbidity in water?
Turbidity is an optical property of water caused by light scattering from suspended and colloidal particles. A portable turbidity meter gives operators an immediate numerical result at the sampling point, helping them check treatment performance, investigate changes and compare a field reading with fixed or laboratory measurements.
The ISO 7027-1 water-quality standard describes quantitative optical methods for determining turbidity. The World Health Organization review of turbidity explains its significance across the drinking-water supply chain. For a practical introduction, read our guide to turbidimeters in water-quality testing.
Where portable turbidity testing is useful
Portable instruments for turbidity
Choose a dedicated turbidimeter when turbidity is the central measurement, or a complete field kit when the investigation also needs supporting water-quality parameters.
TB 350 portable turbidimeter
A dedicated portable instrument for accurate low and high turbidity measurements from 0.01 to 4,000 NTU. Multipath 90° BLAC® technology, guided touchscreen procedures, stored results and supplied calibration standards make it suited to routine field and laboratory work.
Best for: teams that need a dedicated turbidity workflow and a wide measuring range.
Section 82 water-quality kit
A portable field package for broader investigations where turbidity is assessed alongside dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, ammonia and conductivity. It supports incident response, spot checks and independent verification of fixed monitoring systems.
Best for: field teams that need a wider evidence set from one practical kit.

Portable turbidity testing FAQs
What does a portable turbidity meter measure?
It measures the optical effect of suspended and colloidal particles in water. Results are commonly reported in nephelometric turbidity units, or NTU.
Where should turbidity be measured?
The best sampling point depends on the decision you need to make. Common locations include raw-water intakes, treatment stages, filter outlets, final effluent, receiving waters and points used to verify an online instrument.
Is the TB 350 suitable for low and high turbidity?
Yes. The product specification gives a measuring range of 0.01 to 4,000 NTU, covering clear water and much more turbid samples within one dedicated instrument.
When is the Section 82 kit the better choice?
Choose the kit when turbidity is one part of a broader field investigation and you also need parameters such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, ammonia or conductivity.
Can portable testing help verify an online analyser?
Yes. A portable result can provide an independent spot check when commissioning, investigating an unexpected online value or comparing conditions at another point in the process. Sampling method and instrument preparation still need to be controlled.
Can PMA help choose the correct instrument?
Yes. PMA can discuss the application, expected turbidity range, sampling conditions, other parameters, calibration requirements and the most practical instrument package before quotation.
